In today’s digital world, information engulfs us no matter where we are or what we are doing. More importantly, we are making decisions based on the information that is presented to us. Naturally, the better we understand information, the better decisions we will make. I design by the mantra ‘less is more, more or less’. Simplicity is difficult to achieve but is something inherent in the work I have done over the last 20+ years.

app design
Bossanova Robotics created an autonomous robot that would perform the laborious task of checking product inventory across a department store. Shelves were scanned with an array of cameras and the resulting imagery and shelf labels were used to perform store analysis through an application called Store360.
A data visualization of some aisles already scanned by the robot. Each bar displays shelving section and number of product outs found. Bar height and color are used to visually encode number of outs and whether or not the sections contain critical, high turnover products (colored magenta).
Imagery captured by the robot is assembled into a panorama. User can toggle to an image view of any aisle. The product outs are identified with outlined boxes. Shelf labels can be viewed as well using the zoom controls.
Critical, high turnover outs are indicated with magenta outline boxes. Clicking on a product out will display section, product name, and product ID.
User can toggle to a hybrid view of tabular data and aisle imagery. Clicking on a row in the table will result in that product being highlighted on the the imagery side. Selecting from the image side will highlight a row in the table.
The app is responsive and is meant to work across a range of devices. The same information communicated on the tablet or desktop version will be displayed on a mobile device.
Fluence, an aggregate Electronic Medical Record (EMR) application pioneered at UPMC, was crafted to eliminate the hassle of viewing different EMR systems by combining all feeds into one view.
From each section, a physician could drill down into detailed information to get a more thorough view of patient data.
Data visualization was used to quickly inform physicians allowing them to act on the data instead of painstakingly scanning through tabular data to identify outliers.
Inpatient and outpatient records are traditionally managed on independent systems. Combining several EMR feeds into a single view provided a far more efficient way of reviewing patient data.
Horizontally swipeable sections allowed physicians to quickly view high level information about a given patient.
